Whiteboard questions: drawing, diagrams and working

What students can do

• Draw with a pen in six colours and three thicknesses.
• Highlight, and erase.
• Type labels onto the board.
• Select anything they added to move, duplicate or delete it.
• Undo and redo, and clear the board and get it back with undo.

Blank board or a picture underneath

Start blank for free drawing, or add a picture, such as a diagram of a cell, a map or a graph axis, and students draw and label on top of it. The picture stays fixed underneath their work.

Questions that work well

• Draw and label the parts of a flower.
• Draw the forces on a book resting on a table.
• Sketch the graph of y equals x squared.
• Show your working for this long division.
• Draw a picture of a fraction that equals one half.

What the teacher sees

1. Open the live work grid. Each student shows as In progress or Submitted, with a thumbnail of the board.
2. Open any board. Use the red pen to circle, correct or add, give a mark, and leave a note.
3. Move between students with the arrow keys.
4. Choose whether your notes reach students at once or wait until results.
5. Share one board with the class on the projector. Names never appear on it.

Class vote on drawings

Open voting for a set time. Students see every drawing without names and choose one. A live count shows how many have voted, and each student sees how many votes their own drawing received. There are no ranks and no leaderboard.

Tips

• Use a bigger screen for detailed diagrams. A phone works for quick sketches.
• Give a time limit for the drawing so boards are ready at the same moment.
• For typed formulas and equations use a maths question, then use a whiteboard for the diagram.
