Rubrics: show students what a good answer looks like
· 4 min read
A rubric is a short list of what a good answer should have, with a level for each point, such as Not yet, Nearly and Got it. Students see it as a checklist while they work, and you mark by tapping a level for each point. The total adds itself up.
Why use one
- Students know what to aim for before they start, so answers improve.
- Marking is faster and fairer: one tap per point instead of judging the whole answer at once.
- Feedback is specific: students see which point they reached and which they did not.
- The report shows the point the class finds hardest, so you know what to reteach.
Adding a rubric
- 1Open a paragraph, drawing, spoken answer or worksheet question in the editor.
- 2Press Add a rubric. The suggested one fits the question type and the age group.
- 3Change any words. The second box on each point is the hint students see.
- 4Pick the levels, or write your own. The question's points come from the rubric.
Ready-made rubrics
- Good answer: answers the question, explains why, clear. For any subject.
- Little learners: friendly words for drawing, speaking and first writing.
- Maths problem solving: understanding, strategy, accurate working, explanation.
- Claim, evidence, reasoning: for science and social studies explanations.
- Reading response: restate, answer, cite, explain.
- Writing: ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, sentences, spelling and punctuation.
- Diagram or drawing, and Speaking.
Marking and asking for a better version
- 1Open a student's answer from the live screen or the report.
- 2Tap a level for each point and add a short note.
- 3Press Ask to improve to hand it back. The student sees your note and the levels, improves the answer and sends it again.
- 4Every earlier version is kept, so you can see the progress.
For young children
Use the Little learners rubric with three friendly levels. Students can tick each point themselves before they press Done, which builds the habit of checking their own work.
