What is Askroom Live?
Askroom Live is a free web tool for live classroom assessment. A teacher builds a quiz, test, poll or worksheet, shares a join code, and sees every student's answer on their own screen as it is given.
Is Askroom Live free?
Yes. Askroom Live is free for teachers and students. There are no ads, and student answers are never sold or shared.
Do students need an account or an app?
No. Students open the site in any browser, type the join code and their name, and they are in. There is nothing to install and no student account.
How do students join a session?
The teacher shows a six-character join code, a QR code and a link. Students can type the code at askroomlive.com, scan the QR code, or open the link.
Which devices does it work on?
Any phone, tablet, Chromebook or laptop with a modern web browser. The student screen adapts to the size of the device.
What kinds of questions can I ask?
Many kinds: multiple choice, multi-select, true or false, fill in the blank, numeric answer, put in order, match the following, drag into groups, maths and science answers with a formula keyboard, paragraph, poll, word cloud, brainstorm list, whiteboard drawing, spoken answer, content slides, and PDF worksheets that students write on.
Can students type maths, physics and chemistry formulas?
Yes. Maths answers use a built-in formula keyboard with three tabs. The Maths tab has fractions, powers, roots, sums, integrals and inequality signs. The Greek tab has letters used in physics such as lambda, omega, theta and delta. The Science tab has chemical formulas, reaction arrows, charges, degrees, units, vectors and standard form. It works for every grade from primary arithmetic to senior science.
How are maths answers marked?
Numeric maths answers are compared by value, so one half, 0.5 and a typed fraction all count as the same answer. Formulas and equations are compared as written after spacing is tidied, and the teacher lists every accepted form. Students can show working on extra lines, and only the last line is marked while the teacher sees the working.
Can students draw on a whiteboard?
Yes. A drawing question gives each student a whiteboard with a pen in several colours and thicknesses, a highlighter, an eraser, typed text, select and move, undo and redo. It can start blank or on top of a picture such as a diagram. The teacher sees every whiteboard live, can write on any of them in red, and can open a class vote on the drawings without showing names.
Can I use my own PDF worksheet?
Yes. Upload a PDF and every page becomes a page students write on with a pen, a highlighter and typed text. The teacher watches each student's pages fill in live and can write on them in red.
What is the difference between teacher-paced and self-paced?
In a teacher-paced session everyone sees the same question and only the teacher moves to the next one, which suits lessons and discussion. In a self-paced session each student moves through the questions alone and submits at the end, which suits tests and homework.
Can I mark work while students are still answering?
Yes. From the live screen a teacher can open any student's answer, give a mark, draw on a drawing or worksheet, and leave a note, without ending the session.
What does exam mode do?
Exam mode opens the test in full screen, blocks copy, paste and right-click, shuffles questions and options, and records every time a student leaves the test page and for how long. It cannot see a second device or a phone camera, so the record is a starting point for a conversation rather than proof.
How are answers marked?
Choice, number, order, match, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank and maths answers are marked automatically. Paragraphs, drawings, spoken answers and worksheets are marked by the teacher, during the session or afterwards in the report.
Can I export or print results?
Yes. Every session has a report that can be printed and exported as a CSV file. An assessment can also be copied into Word or Google Docs, or printed as a paper with an answer key.
Does Askroom Live use AI?
No. Askroom Live does not use AI to write questions, mark answers or give feedback. Feedback comes from the teacher and from the explanations the teacher writes.
What information do students give?
Only the name they type when they join, and their answers. Teachers can delete a session, and with it every student name and answer in it, at any time.
How long does a join code last?
The teacher chooses, from 30 minutes up to 30 days. After that, new students cannot join, but students already inside can keep working until the teacher ends the session.
